Nuclear Power Digital Control Room Resources
INNOVATIONS IN NUCLEAR POWER:
THE DIGITAL MODERNIZATION OF CONTROL ROOMSA recent study from Idaho National Labs (INL) conducted as part of the Light Water Reactor Sustainability (LWRS) Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), identifies practices and principles to support nuclear power plant Digital Instrumentation & Controls (DI&C) modernizations.
One practice proposed was the use of a safety-qualified switching architecture, based on Keyboard-Video-Mouse (KVM) components, referred to as a Display-Keyboard-Trackball (DKT) architecture. The DKT architecture envisioned by the DOE research provides for a flexible Human System Interface (HSI) solution for the Main Control Room (MCR) that achieves the benefits of:
- simplification of the control room layout
- improvement of the Human System Interface (HSI)
- cost reduction from fewer displays
- consolidation of operator functions
Thinklogical’s highly-secure signal management products help address NERC-CIP cyber requirements, resulting in better data security, reduced costs and increased productivity.

THINKLOGICAL, A BELDEN BRAND, INTRODUCES SMP3 CONTROL MANAGEMENT SOLUTION AT INFOCOMM 2021 IN BOOTH 2325
ORLANDO, Fla. – Oct. 27, 2021 — Thinklogical, A Belden Brand, a global manufacturer of secure high performance video distribution (VDS) and KVM (keyboard, video, and mouse) extension and switching systems, announced today that it will be demonstrating its new SMP3 (System Management Portfolio) control management solution at InfoComm 2021 in Orlando in booth 2325.
SMP3 is a comprehensive package of integrated hardware and software that provides powerful audio-visual (AV) system configuration, remote management, and maintenance capabilities, making it easier for users to set up, operate and update Thinklogical installations of any size.
Thinklogical provides an innovative and highly secure end-to-end signal management infrastructure unique in enabling signal isolation, restricted switching and partitioning of multi-classification video and data through a single matrix switch chassis with an accredited multi-level security architecture. Typical applications include defense, intelligence and government command and control facilities, critical infrastructure control rooms, live event projection mapping, and film visual effects and post-production.
New features and enhancements in SMP3 include a graphical On-Screen Display (OSD) that provides a visual representation of a user’s desk, an interactive Drag and Drop screen that mimics a room’s configuration, resource pooling for shared access to sources, and flexible, user-definable Hot Keys for quick access to key system features. Other SMP3 capabilities include remote system monitoring and updating for simplified system maintenance, and mouse and keyboard sharing for improved user collaboration.
“The introduction of SMP3 is the direct result of Thinklogical listening to and productizing customer suggestions and requests,” said Alexandra Cheever, president of Thinklogical. “The need to quickly adapt to changing technology and workflow requirements is core to customer success in mission-critical control room environments. SMP3 not only helps users get their Thinklogical installation up and running faster, but it also simplifies ongoing maintenance and improves operational efficiency.”
Typical AV system control software requires costly and time-consuming custom programming to install, configure and update. The intuitive graphical user interface available in SMP3 enables quick set-up and control of each source, destination, and matrix switch in the system. Tabs along the bottom and top of the screen allow users to navigate effortlessly through the features and capabilities of the system with just a click of the mouse. In SMP3, changes to the room configuration, sources and destinations can be made quickly and easily by an administrator or authorized user with no specialized programming skills required.
SMP3 empowers organizations by providing:
- User friendly operation: no complex programming required
- Spreadsheet-based system configuration for faster setup
- Graphical drag and drop on screen display
- Designed for increased productivity and efficiency
- Improved resource pooling for reduced hardware and software costs
- Increased system and application security
- Touch panel interface for easy system operation
- Faster implementation and simplified maintenance
- Support for large Thinklogical installations
SMP3 is compatible with Thinklogical SMP2 hardware (Appliance, Module, Client), with an Integrated Client Transmitter (modular chassis-mounted PC with built-in KVM extender) option available for higher performance in large installations.
SMP3 improves overall system performance and value by reducing support effort, lowering total cost of ownership, enhancing productivity, and maximizing system uptime. SMP3 is available now from Thinklogical and authorized resellers.
